The World’s Fair
Verse 1
I took a trip to the World’s Fair
To see what the future held in store.
There were flying cars and trips to Mars once a day.
We’d all live to be 100,
And nobody’s sick or poor.
But the Future’s here, and it didn’t work out that way.
Cho:
Who said, Who said.
Who ever said the world’s fair.
Verse 2
I had a boy and we were in love.
We were so sure we’d never split.
I would be a nurse and he’d be an astronaut.
But Billy took off for California
And I ended up with his kid.
Some things (just) don’t go the way they ought.
Cho:
Who said, Who said.
Who ever said the world’s fair
Bridge:
Everybody flew at super-sonic speeds
And the Future looked so good to me.
But I don’t spend a lot of time crying about
The way Tomorrowland didn’t work out.
Cho:
Who said, Who said.
Who ever said the world’s fair
Who said, Who said.
Who ever said the world’s fair
Verse 3
I had some dreams that all came true
And I had some dreams that fell apart.
I didn’t get to outer space
And I didn’t get a flying car.
I didn’t get the girl I wanted
But I probably got the girl I need.
Mo: I’m still working to heal this broken heart.

Split in Two

Split In Two
Look outside the window,
Look at that Airstream trailer.
It’s twisted up and nearly ripped in two.
There’s a bed and there’s a pillow
And a scrapbook full of pictures
After something like this , what do people do?
Here come the cops and tow trucks
To clear the wreck away.
The traffic’s slow ‘cause everybody’s got to watch
Look at those broken dishes
And that busted up TV
And a fifth of someone’s favorite Scotch.
Cho
When Billy and I got married
And made our two lives one
We never looked that far ahead
And never thought it would come
That he would get the records.
And I would take the books.
And we would split the silverware
While everybody looks..
( at the) Torn up bits of our lives
Blowing like trash on the highway.
It started out so easy
I don’t know when it changed
I don’t know how it ever got so hard.
But we cussed and we shouted
And called each other names
And It got so mean it split this house apart.

Hold Still

Hold Still
My name is Mathew Brady.
I hail from Saratoga.
Now, I live in Washington
Amid a Civil War.
I made my reputation
With a tripod and a camera;
And plan on photographing
Every soldier, every sword.
Chorus:
As I said s“ Hold Still, Hold Still”
A smiling soldier hoists a flag
And his comrades gather ‘round.
Verse 2.
To the Rebs it was Manassas
To the North it was Bull Run.
To me is was a worthless creek
Hardly fit for cattle.
Before the day was over,
And the next sad day begun
I photographed one thousand boys
Who lost their lives in battle.
Chorus:
“Hold Still. Hold Still”
As I focus on those jolly boys
Now dead upon the ground.
Verse 3
I showed them in their uniforms
In all their flashing glory
I photographed them as they died
A’bleeding on the clay.
I trained my lens unflinching
On subjects grim and gory,
And I thought “ This war can’t last too long,
When they see what price they pay.”
Verse 4
But it lasted four more awful years
And I photographed the story;
From Lincoln to the generals,
To the lowly young cadet.
But these plates don’t show the color
Of their dried blood in the sun.
You cannot hear their cries of pain
Or smell the stench of death.
Chorus:
As I said s“ Hold Still, Hold Still”
A smiling soldier hoists a flag
And his comrades gather ‘round.
“Hold Still. Hold Still”
As I focus on those jolly boys
Now dead upon the ground.
My name is Mathew Brady
I live here in New York
I am broke and I’m forgotten
Aand I am nearly dead..
My plates were sold as greenhouse panes.
And remanded by the courts.
They were my last reminders of
All those times I said:
Chorus:
“ Hold Still, Hold Still”
A smiling soldier hoists a flag
And his comrades gather ‘round.
“Hold Still. Hold Still”
As I focus on those jolly boys
Now dead upon the ground.

Say What You Need to Say Now
1.
Don’t hang around ,
Stare at the ground
And just mumble
Don’t make me wait
In this state while my
Confidence crumbles
2.
I have a feeling that
You are concealing
Something I should know
Whisper it. Shout it.
Spit it out before I
Explode.
B.
Maybe you’re shy?
Or maybe you’re proud?
You’ve got to get past this somehow.
If you’re going to say something
Say what you need to say now.
3.
(Some say) silence is golden
(But I) think what you hold in
Can kill you.
Let it all go and
What comes back I know
Will fulfill you.
4
So much goes undone
When the cat’s got your tongue.
Come on, help me.
So much goes unsaid
If it stays in your head;
Darling tell me , just tell me. Just tell me.
C.
Words you rarely have spoken get
Stuck on the way out (of)your mouth.
They’re words that you usually choke on.
But I need to hear you
Say them out loud.
If you’re going to say something
Say what you need to say now.
C-2
I know that I’m guilty of blather.
And sometimes I never shut-up
But really, which would you rather
My blah blah blah
Or a mime who says nothing
Driving a otherwise perfectly
sane person nuts?
